Gonna keep on dancin' to the rock and roll/On Saturday night, Satur...oh, whoops, wait, wrong "Saturday Night."

"Saturday Night" by Suede (1997)

Underground station: Holborn Station's disused platform and the tunnel that leads to the defunct Aldwych Station on the Piccadilly Line

Passing faces on the road

"Piece by Piece" by Feeder (2001). This video was originally made for the song "Suffocate" (1998). In 2001 when the album Turn was released in the UK, "Piece by Piece" was released in Europe with this video. Howzat for versatility?!

Underground stations: Monument and Bank Stations and Victoria Station on a District Line train

Sun is in the sky/Oh why oh why/Would I wanna be anywhere else?

"LDN" by Lily Allen (2006)

Ladbroke Grove on the Hammersmith & City Line

(Video suggested by the ever-delightful Lucy-Anne!)

I used to think living in a London bedsit would be fun. Then I heard this song.

"Bedsitter" by Soft Cell (1981)

Underground stations: St. John's Wood on the Jubilee Line and Piccadilly Circus on the Piccadilly Line and the Bakerloo Line

Your best strategy in evading a robot: change trains at Charing Cross.

"Believe" by The Chemical Brothers (2005)

Underground stations: Maida Vale on the Bakerloo Line (underground scenes) and Goodge Street on the Northern Line. Which means that to escape the robot, he takes the Bakerloo to Charing Cross and changes to a northbound Northern Line train. It's a little bit of an out of the way detour. But that's always good strategy when being pursued by a robot.

(Notice, of course, it does him absolutely no good.)

Scissors, Canaries, and Daleks, oh my.

"Mary" by Scissor Sisters (2004)

Underground station: Canary Wharf, on the Jubilee Line.

Canary Wharf is one of my favorite new Tube stations along the ultra-modern Jubilee Line Extension:

Luckily for Scissor Sisters, they were not at Canary Wharf when this happened:

I wish I was in London.

"Turn Back Time" by Aqua (1998)

Underground stations: Bank Station on the Central Line, Northern Line, Waterloo & City Line and the Docklands Light Railway, and the disused platform 5 at Holborn on the Central Line and Piccadilly Line.

"Turn Back Time" was featured on the soundtrack for the 1998 Gwyneth Paltrow/John Hannah movie Sliding Doors, a dandy London movie that's one of my favorites: a mix of fantasy and romance, and of course the London Underground:

Sliding Doors also features my favorite London bridge, the Albert Bridge. Which has nothing to do with the London Underground at all. But it's a beautiful bridge, and a lovely scene:

Golly. I wish I was in London right now.

When you're sick in bed, every dream looks like this.

"Firestarter" by Prodigy (1996)

Underground station: video shot in the disused Tube tunnels between Aldwych on the Piccadilly Line (Aldwych station was closed in 1994) and Holborn on the Central Line and Piccadilly Line

Achoo! You know the drill.

"1234" by The Schla La Las (2007), directed by Ben Cowell

Underground station: unknown. But I bet it's somewhere near Brick Lane.

Me: Cough, cough. You: Watching a video set in the London Underground.

"Lucas with the Lid Off" by Lucas (1994), directed by Michael Gondry

Underground stations: exterior shot is at Barons Court; interior is Ealing Common (or a mock-up of it); both are on the Piccadilly Line and District Line

Can't sleep. Got a cold. Watching a music video set in the London Underground.

"Ain't That a Lot of Love" by Simply Red (1999)

Underground stations: Outdoor scenes shot around the Underground entrance to Piccadilly Circus station on the Piccadilly Line and Bakerloo Line; interior Underground scenes shot at the Mornington Crescent tube station on the Northern Line

(Why is the Mornington Crescent underground station among the most famous of them all?)

Oh heck, as long as we're at it:

"Mornington Crescent" by Belle & Sebastian (live on The Music Show, BBC Scotland)

PS: Mornington Crescent. I win!

Cough, cough, cough. As I'm still ill, here's another music video set in the London Underground.

"Cry" by Alex Parks (2003)

Underground station: Charing Cross on the Jubilee Line (station closed in 1999 but still used for filming purposes) and Green Park on the Piccadilly Line, Victoria Line, and Jubilee Line.

I'm still out sick. So here's another music video set in the London Underground.

"New Song" by Howard Jones (1984)

Underground station: Holborn (Kingsway) on the Central Line and Piccadilly Line (station name changed to "Holborn" in 1933 but only gradually changed on maps and signage)

Monday, April 14, 2008

I'm out sick with a cold. In the meantime, here's a music video set in the London Underground.

"Do It Again" by The Kinks (1984), directed by Julien Temple

Underground station: Aldwych on the Piccadilly Line (Aldwych station was closed in 1994)
